I wasn’t feeling very well this week - most of my kids were home with the flu and I believe I had it as well. I didn’t really overeat but wasn’t on much of a food schedule and was hardly keeping food down. Now my appetite is back and I am wondering if you have any advice for keeping the three pounds that I lost this week off for good.
Signed, Feeling Much Better
Dear Feeling Much Better,
I am so glad to hear that you are on the mend! Some of this week’s weight loss is obviously going to be temporary because water weight will come back as soon as you are hydrated, and that is a good thing. The remaining weight loss, the part that came from reducing calories, is the weight loss that can be retained, as long as you don’t overeat in the next few days. This can be tricky because your body can be craving extra food after several days of undereating.
The best way to keep the pounds off would be to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate so that your body doesn’t mistake thirst for hunger. If you feel hungrier than usual try adding foods that are most often eaten out of hunger, such as yogurt or egg whites. This way, you will be sure that you are truly eating because you are hungry, not out of boredom, missing food, or cravings.
Finally, enjoy your health, and don’t get too stuck on keeping the temporary weight loss off. Just stick to your original plan, and your weight will continue to come off at a steady pace, without any need for extra “jumps” in your weight loss!
