Peter Kaye, M.D., colorectal surgeon at Bon Secours Medical Group’s Ramapo Valley Surgical Associates in Suffern, gets satisfaction in helping people in the community by providing them with the latest, most up-to-date treatments for colorectal diseases. Three years ago, he recruited a new “partner” to assist him in his mission – the da Vinci robot.
Dr. Kaye became the first surgeon in Rockland County to perform robotic colorectal resections, and since then, he has performed approximately 200 such surgeries at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Dr. Kaye says that robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows him to perform the most complex procedures with better visualization and more precision, than is possible with conventional techniques. Because it is a minimally invasive surgery through tiny incisions, it results in a less painful recovery, a shorter stay in the hospital, and a quicker return to normal life for his patients.
Robotic surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System, which is available at Good Samaritan Hospital, uses a camera and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached to them. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. The console gives the surgeon a high-definition, magnified 3-D view of the surgical site, as well as dexterity that is far superior than the human hand.
“We’re doing cutting edge surgery right here in the community, close to home.” Dr. Kaye said. “We’re offering procedures using the latest technology that you would normally have to go to the city to find.”
As a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Kaye takes care of patients of all ages. He specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus including hemorrhoids, anal fistula, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, and cancers of the colon, rectum, and anus. He is also adept at performing colonoscopies.
During his eight years at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dr. Kaye has advanced the care available to the community. He has provided cutting-edge technology and treatments, right here in our backyard. “There is no reason to travel to receive excellent care for colorectal illnesses.”
